Gleason Score

The Gleason Score is used to help evaluate the prognosis of men with prostate cancer. The score is determined by the histological appearance of prostate tissue:

Gleason Patterns:

• Pattern 1: Small, uniform glands
• Pattern 2: More space between glands
• Pattern 3: Infiltration of cells from glands at margins
• Pattern 4: Irregular masses of cells with few glands
• Pattern 5: Lack of glands, sheets of cells

Gleason Score Calculation:

• The Gleason score is the sum of the primary and secondary patterns, each graded on a scale of 1 to 5.
• Scores range from 2 to 10.
• Low scores (2-6) suggest less aggressive cancer.
• Intermediate scores (7) suggest moderately aggressive cancer.
• High scores (8-10) suggest highly aggressive cancer.
